Japanese Buttsex

*shrieks* Yaoi! *falls over in ecstatic bliss*
Okay. *smiles*

I'm a yaoi fan and writer and I live in the US. I didn't get to yaoi con this year, but my roommate did. She makes a lovely Sasuske. I like the fantasy and romance more than the 'Butt Sex'. Not that I don't like that too, but the characters staring into each other's eyes and knowing their hearts will be forever true is more fun :)

Thank you for this post. It was interesting.

hahahaha... that was at Yaoi Con this year near San Francisco. I was in attendance when that conversation between the MC and the crowd was going on.

I would have to say that US Yaoi fans are just as into the romance as their Japanese counterparts, but that it was probably a lot easier/funnier for the writer to talk about "BUTTSEX" and the hilarity of the Bishounen Auction than it was to discuss the finer points of Yaoi fandom. From what I understand, all the Japanese Guests of Honor that are invited to Yaoi Con usually return to Japan with rave reviews about how awesome the event/people are.

Also, another thing to consider is that many US Yaoi fans don't understand Japanese, so they have to solely rely on the visuals (ie: BUTTSEX) of the doujinshi they're buying to understand what's going on. Obviously it's much easier to understand the more risque stuff than flowers and romance! :D
inkdancing and Two eLs, thanks for the comments. It is great to hear from American Yaoi fans, and especially from people who were at Yaoi Con this year. Good to know that American fans love the romance as much as Japanese fans do.

You have a good point, Two eLs, that for Yaoi fans who don't understand Japanese it is easier to rely on the visuals.

But I feel that there is no excuse for the journalist to give such a one sided view... I often get terribly frustrated when I see how Japanese culture (or any culture actually) is misinterpreted abroad.
I'm not a fan of yaoi but I always defend the right for people to like it. (though I kind of find slash anoying sometimes XD)
A news making company will always try to show the most attention catching side of a thing. I'm sure many yaoi fans are not only there for the buttsex.
I read in another blog the encoraging the yaoi fans not to shy when they are asked "why do you like yaoi" He said that fans should be treated like weird bugs just because their liking.
